How many things can one Saturday in Kernville hold? On October 17, the answer depends on a 30-minute gap on the clock.
Most of October in Kernville is spread out so that each weekend has one place at its center. Rivernook's beer festival and the Kernville Stampede Rodeo both land on Saturday, October 17, and the gap between them is short enough to plan around.
Four Weekends, Four Anchors
| Dates | Event | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 2 to 4 | Kernville Kampout, a camping and motorcycle event for ages 21 and up | Kernville |
| Oct. 9 and 10 | Kernville Rod Run & Swap, now in its 51st year | Riverside Park, free for spectators |
| Oct. 17 | Rivernook Beer & Music Festival and Kernville Stampede Rodeo | Rivernook Campground and John E. McNally Arena |
| Last weekend of October | Kernville Fall Festival | Circle Park, dates to confirm |
The first weekend overlaps the tail end of the Kern County Fair, which runs at the fairgrounds on South P Street in Bakersfield through October 4. By the time the fair's carnival lights go dark, Kernville's calendar has already started. Each event after that has its own home ground, and only October 17 has two of them.
The Rod Run Is a Two-Day Event
The Kernville Rod Run is easy to file under "car show at the park," but its schedule reaches well past Riverside Park. The organizers list a Friday-morning cruise into the Sequoia National Forest, ending at the Trail of 100 Giants. On Saturday, after the show, there is a second cruise around Lake Isabella.
The Friday cruise depends on the season. A local community calendar lists the Western Divide Highway, which leads to the Trail of 100 Giants, as open from May through October, weather permitting. A mid-October cruise happens near the end of that window.
The show's home is also worth a look. Riverside Park reopened in April 2025 after floodwaters from the 2023 water year badly damaged it. At the reopening, the Kernville Chamber of Commerce president called it the most beautiful park in Kern County. Spectator admission to the Rod Run is free, and the event promises a swap meet, vendors, food, music, kids' games, raffles and awards.
October 17, Hour by Hour
Both October 17 events start from published times, so the day can be laid out in order.
- 12 p.m. VIP admission opens at the Rivernook Beer & Music Festival in the Rivernook meadow.
- 1 p.m. General admission opens at Rivernook.
- 5 p.m. The festival ends for both ticket types.
- 5:30 Gates open for the Kernville Stampede Rodeo at the John E. McNally Arena, which will feature bull riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping and mutton busting.
On paper the two events fit together. The festival ends 30 minutes before the rodeo opens. The drive between Rivernook, on Sierra Way, and the arena is not in any listing I found, so time it before you commit. The local paper's full rodeo story sits behind a subscription, so ticket details are worth confirming before you go.
Anyone planning both should also settle the ride between them in advance. The Rivernook festival is a craft beer event, and the festival listing says campsites at Rivernook were available to book. A designated driver, or a campsite at Rivernook itself, takes care of the question before the day starts.
The beer festival has a local history. Earlier editions were organized with Kern River Brewing Company, which opened in 2006 and, according to 2024 local TV reporting, was sold to its employees. Those editions were invitationals, with brewers hand-selected by the brewery. The 2024 edition benefited SOS Dog Rescue. For 2026, the listing names Rivernook Campground as organizer and describes the day as a Brewer's Invitational. It does not say who the proceeds support or which breweries are pouring, so check the Rivernook page before you go.
The Festival That Closes the Month
The Kernville Chamber of Commerce runs the Kernville Fall Festival at Circle Park. Its page still shows last year's schedule, which included a costume contest, a trick-or-treat parade, dog contests, line dancing, pie eating and pumpkin carving over October 25 and 26, 2025. I did not find this year's lineup posted.
The chamber describes the festival as held on the last weekend of October. This year that could mean two different weekends. October 24 and 25 is the last full weekend of the month, and October 31 is a Saturday. Until the chamber posts dates, hold both weekends open. The chamber's page is the place to confirm.
